Case Study 1

Even with a watchful eye and careful control of blood sugar diabetes related problems can arise. When this nurse with long standing diabetes developed multiple infected ulcers on her foot she turned to the institute for lower extremity restoration for help. X-rays revealed that diminished sensation (neuropathy) had led to a series of fractures in the foot (Charcot's arthropathy) further complicating the situation. She was strongly committed to saving the foot and greatly desired to avoid a below knee amputation. The surgical team at the institute cleaned and treated her wounds with antibiotic beads. An expendable muscle was then transplanted from her back to the foot utilizing microsurgical techniques and covered with grafted skin. After an additional soft tissue and bone contouring procedure she is walking and living independently.

45% of non-traumatic amputations are performed for diabetes related problems.

The cornerstone of complex diabetic wound care is thorough surgical removal of unhealthy tissue (debridement).

If debridement has resulted in exposure of structures such as nerves, bones, tendons or joints plastic surgical may be required.

More than 2 million of the estimated 14 million Americans living with diabetes will develop foot ulcers at some time

Without proper treatment these wounds can rapidly become limb threatening.
